Spares – we ended up ditching the spare whole strut in Bucharest to save some weight (and having to maneuver it around every time we put stuff on and off the roof rack, which was every time we were away from the car for more than an hour) but probably should have brought along a few more essential spares, such as springs themselves. I think we ended up breaking all four corners at least once.
Fuel cans – We brought two five gallon/20 Liter cans, strapped to our roof, expecting to be traveling through areas where fuel was especially hard to come by, but this never really seemed to be an issue. Uzbekistan, where most cars run on methane, and diesel is almost non existent, was what prompted us to want to stock up on fuel. Turkey, too, was supposed to have expensive enough fuel to make it worth it to buy the fuel before entering, but i doubt the cost of the cans outweighed any savings on the cost of fuel. I didn’t keep good enough records of individual fuel purchases to see how much we actually spent, but I remember being more appalled at the price of fuel in central Europe than Turkey for some reason.
